QC1 is a seriously versatile quadcopter drone, initially submitted with Darpa in May 2017, then withdrawn due to obstruction by Boeing; which later, Boeing's Octopocopter prototype was their attempt at cloning and failed...

Well here it is, what they failed to clone. A 10 ft length heavy weight UAV, that can carry a paylaod of 500-1,000 lbs.  No liquid fueled or batteries, so this aircraft sheds an immense amount of weight, which that weight savings is used for that large payload capacity.

 

This air craft is extremely high performance, similar to a racing quad copter within the R/C hobby, but scaled up and beefed up.

It is so robust, the pods can even become weaponized for military use, and operate in direct close combat providing immense fire power capabilities for ground troops, up close and personal. Every wonder what a mini gun would be like cruising down an ally shooting up terrorists?  This can do that..

QC1 wasn't meant for military though, it is meant to become a heavy weight UAV in the commercial sector, that is able to provide vertical lift ability and heavy payload deliveries for urban environments and seaborne activities.

 

For example, in 2017, hurricanes struck the Houston area and Puerto Rico pretty hard. So many helicopters were dispatched for rescue missions.  If this quadcopter would had been in the Dept of Defense or DHS inventory, they could of loaded up hundred of them rapidly and had them airborne in the region within 24 hours, pre positioned. 

Not mounted with pods for utility, but rescue baskets similar to USCG, and being flown by FPV / Visually. They wouldn't need to drop the baskets like rescue helicopters do, but sweep right down to the person needing rescuing, so they can get in, and it can take them to safety.  This aspect is able to provide a large expansion of mission capabilities for life saving operations, even in rough conditions..

  Other aspects, this year, 2018, many dozens of large forest/wild fires along the west coast of the United States and Canada.  If the US National Forest Service had hundreds of the QC1 model UAV in inventory, they could be positioned and fly non stop dropping flame retardant, continually.  This aspect greatly ramps up capabilities of fighting wild fires and forest fires, because the operators are able to bring the aircraft in much closer to where the payloads need to drop. And if there is 100 of them operating in a swarm pattern configuration, that delivery capability is immense. Similar to 100 helicopters operating 24/7 non stop, and getting right to where it needs to be, every single time. Once payload delivery, they return, land, refill, then go.   And above all, they do not become fatigued due to long hours or need any sleep.

 

Costs to operate the QC1 is much lower then conventional turbine based aircraft, because this aircraft is fueled by hydrogen, and that hydrogen can be produced via water electrolysis using solar power.   In essence, 90% of the costs to operate are removed from the equation.

 

For offshore operations, configuring the QC1 with flotation devices, ie floats, similar to a float plane. That means this aircraft could even land and take off from water locations as well.

 


 

As with anyone concerned about flight, the safety features are immense. 

  • If there is a motor failure, each nacelle has 2 motors, so the other motor will take up the load of the failed motor providing several minutes to land safely..

  • If failure occurs over water, this aircraft floats, since the airframe is built using composites and the main body is a massive high pressure gaseous tank, that is also conforming technologies for 8,000 PSI.  To put this in laymen's terms, it's a very strong pontoon in water that could survive hurricane conditions.

  • If catastrophic failure occurs, it is also equipped a BRS (Ballistic Recovery System), which can deploy deploy and the entire aircraft will come down safely.

Overall, every contingency is designed into this aircraft.
